Help Save Ruskin’s View

Without your help, access to Ruskin’s View may be permanently lost. Our mission is to restore and reopen our iconic ‘Ruskin’s View’ and footpath, preserving this treasured piece of Kirkby Lonsdale’s heritage and valuable public access for future generations to enjoy.

What has happened to Ruskin’s View?

Erosion

The impact of major flooding has increased erosion & severely undercut the embankment. The unpredictable and continuous erosion means the slope below Ruskin’s View is considered high risk for landslip and unsafe for public access.

Access Closed

Access to both the viewpoints and the footpath had to be urgently closed to the public in September, 2021, cutting off a valuable network of footpaths and public access that link community amenities (including The Rugby Club & St Mary’s Churchyard) and walking routes for both residents and visitors.

Lost Cultural Asset

Residents and visitors have lost beloved community space and a renowned heritage attraction; Ruskin’s View had become an intrinsic part of Kirkby Lonsdale’s story and community, hosting thousands of visitors every year, inspiring countless artists & creatives, and providing a freely accessible space which has benefitted the physical and mental wellbeing of residents for decades.

About Ruskin’s View

Ruskin’s View is a historic viewpoint & important cultural asset, situated above and along the banks of the River Lune, providing a breath-taking panorama of the Lune Valley. It was painted by JMW Turner in 1822 and inspired the 19th century art critic, social theorist, painter and poet John Ruskin, who in 1875, proclaimed it as ’One of the loveliest views in England, and therefore the world’. It has become a renowned heritage attraction and an intrinsic part of Kirkby Lonsdale’s story and community, hosting thousands of visitors every year, inspiring countless artists & creatives, and providing a freely accessible space which has benefitted the physical and mental wellbeing of residents for decades.
